Travancore Canal view postcards....1933 real photo affixed & cancelled with 6 cash.

Stretching out for a distance of 560 kms, Trivandrum-Shoranur Canal or Parvathy Puthanar or TS Canal was a major route of transportation of people and ferrying of goods. Water from the canal in the earlier days, possibly in the 18th and 19th century was utilised for drinking and bathing also.
The TS Canal was first constructed in part from Channankara till Trivandrum, so that the traffic could lead from Varkala up to Trivandrum. After the construction of canal up to Trivandrum, the Paravoor Canal came into being, linking backwaters of Edava Kayal and Paravur Kayal, while the Paravur Kayal was later on connected with Asthamudi Kayal by the Quilon Canal. For the very first time, the canal system in the backwaters was completed by 1880, which allowed movement of people and cargo connecting Travancore with the Southern Kerala region.
